Artist's Statement

My paintings and drawings are the result of a tussle between what I want to do and what the painting needs in order to be better.

I paint, draw, erase, and sometimes even turn the canvas upside down to see if it makes any sense at all. I start over often and rethink everything all the time.

The lines and layers of paint and line give the image a history. If you look closely, you can see evidence where a nose moved up on a face or a window in an interior exists behind what’s now a blank wall, or where a shadow looks a lot like it may have once been an angel’s wing.  Another way to say it is: this is how I play.
