The Dream of Napoleon House: I dreamed that John Marlboro and Herschel Edwin Goodwin decided to stop in one late evening at the Napoleon House. They were “legal drinking age” that night, if you’re asking. The French Quarter is full of great places to visit in the dark of night. Napoleon House is famous for its Pimm’s Cups, but they opted for the Guinness Stout and a side of spumoni, which now that I think about it probably came from Brocatto’s.$150 ON REDBUBBLE
I thought it would take me about 2 months to finish this painting. Yeah, maybe I dream of Napoleon House, but I also dream I’m a faster painter. I had all the ingredients and all the reasons needed for believing this dream could come true: I had the idea, a had a 40-inch canvas, and I had time. Also, I wanted to dive back into painting after spending the Covid Years working mainly on digital art. Also I had the idea that I’d love to learn more about acrylics. They’re a little bit simpler than oils (meaning they clean up with water) and there are fewer chemicals. But I got really thrown off by that dang doorway-on-an-angle that Napoleon House has. Once I got that perfect, I saw that the rest of the painting was out of proportion to the scale of the doors. So, that meant I could change the whole painting or change the perfect doors. I changed the doors. Then once the doors were right, the bike was too small. After a couple weeks of fixing the bike, it was still too small. And in the wrong place. By the end, pretty much everything changed from the original concept. Seven months after starting it was finished. Now, I just want to do another one!
