This holiday tradition is fueled by egg nog

Every December for the past jillion years I've done a hand-made Christmas card. This holiday tradition started when I was a teenager -- my mailing list was super short and all the cards were unique and hand-painted. As my mailing list grew I started using lithography, eching and block printing…

The Full Montie

I decided to break out of the box a little and go below the shoulders. For the past year and a half I've been concentrating on faces and I wanted to go beyond that and work on the whole person. This is my first in, hopefully, a long series.

Diggin’ the Sketchin’

I'm kinda falling in love with Autodesk Sketchbook. As my internal processing of the questions "so, what are you gonna do next?," "what kind of artist are you, anyway?," and "is it okay to just, well, play?" chugs away I find myself going down the digital art path. (more…)

Autumn watercolors

During a recent walk in the woods with friends we saw our first fall colors of the season. My usual art plan for vacations, for this was a mini-vacation to Missoula, Montana for Lizzie and Erik's wedding, is to leave all my supplies behind and, if time permits and opportunity…

Go forth and play

Playing around with pen and ink in my little wee moleskin-like sketch pad on the 4th of July. What could be more patriotic? I'm basically trying to do the impossible (again) and make black ink appear to look smooth and gray. Yeah, that's what pencils do, I know, but every…

Ghost Hunting

When I paint, I never know how things are going to end up. I start with a vague idea like “someone in a doorway” or “that feeling when I’m in an old neighborhood.” The best way to start is to just put paint on the canvas. As the image progresses,…

Frame job

An admission of guilt: all the frames on my website are FAKE! Yeah, I have to say that although these frames would be awesome, they're all photoshopped. Hopefully, this was obvious to the naked eye, but I just wanted to come clean. Wouldn't you rather see images of artwork with…

Celestine

This piece is for a new show in August 2017 at Evermore Prints in Boise. The name Celestine, or Célestine, is Edgar Degas' mother's name, which seemed somehow appropriate.

Watercolor play

Last weekend we were in Northern Idaho at Twin Lake, near Coeur d'Alene. It was great to relax and paint with a box of 99-cent watercolors and a ball-point pen I bought at a local drug store. Watercolor play works wonders on the soul.

All the light

My show at the Carol Robinson Gallery opens on May 7th. I delivered 11 new pieces to the gallery this week for the Houseghosts exhibition. I completed this painting in Old Algiers while staying for about a month at a little shotgun home on Bouny Street. The painting's title reflects…

The Annunciation

This painting of the Annunciation was finished this week. It is based on a painting that I completed several years ago and purchased by my friend, Dan Sonnier.  The earlier painting served as the starting point for this piece. The Annunciation will be part in  an exhibition in New Orleans in March along with the…
