Two cozy homes in the Mid City neighborhood of New Orleans are separated by a protected walkway to the back yard. The doors to one house are closed but the place has a certain homely friendliness to it. It’s approachable. The darkened windows of the other house are less welcoming. That gate, though, the one that’s slightly open and which leads down the path to the back yard, is much more promising. The garden it protects is probably well tended, if the tidy home with its clean-swept pavement in front is any indication.
